Dai Project
Dai/Han Bilingual Education Project
Dai/Han Bilingual Education Project
The first year of the preschool program will be similar to the Dong program; it will be 100% mother tongue, Dai. The current plans are that during the second year of the preschool program there will be a transition time into teaching the children Chinese as a second language. This will enable them to have a good foundation in oral Chinese before they begin first grade and are expected to begin using the Chinese textbooks. It is expected that during the first through sixth grades, the children will continue to have one Dai language class per week in order for them to continue to develop their mother tongue language skills.
There are also plans that an adult literacy program will be set up in conjunction with the children’s program, most directly aimed towards the parents of the preschoolers.
Currently the staff is working on curriculum and materials for the first year preschool. There have already been several teacher training sessions, and these sessions will continue throughout the next year. There has also been a seminar for education officials, and we are grateful for their support. We anticipate great things for this project!
